Dolby blast - Burton Mail

5th August 1992
Gresley Rovers boss Steve Dolby blasted FIFA’s new “no backpass” rule after seeing his side stumble to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle Town at the Moat Ground last night.

The rule prevents defenders from kicking the ball back to their keeper – viewed by soccer’s supreme rule making body as a time-wasting tactic.

But Dolby said: “One of the reasons why we didn’t play well tonight was because we were worrying about the new rule too much.

“It’s posing a problem and I don’t think it’s doing the game much credit. The players don’t like it at all. But we’re stuck with it so we’ve got to learn to cope.”

Gresley get another opportunity to do that tomorrow at Armitage.
