Robbie keeps an open mind - Andy Parker – Burton Mail

25th September 1992
Robbie Briscoe has taken the giant step from first division Derby County to Moat Street, Church Gresley, with ease.

But the question circulating local soccer circles this week was – where will his next step lead?

The former Rams man produced a five star show in Rovers’ win over Evesham United on Saturday – and that was just the latest in a string of impressive performances by the 23-year-old, who gave up the full time game last summer.

After scoring twice and setting up two more goals in a 5-0 win Briscoe insisted: “I’m very happy at Gresley – but I’m keeping my options open.”

No names are being mentioned, but it is in fact that bigger clubs are now tracking Briscoe’s progress and Moat fans fear someone will come in with an offer that the full back will find impossible to refuse.

Briscoe steered away from speculation however, insisting: “I’m a Gresley Rovers player at the moment, and if things change that’s not in my hands, basically.”

The man who spent six years at the Baseball Ground but chose a part-time career with Rovers in preference to joining another league club when he was released by the Rams at the end of last season has already become a popular figure at the Moat Ground – as was plainly evident when he was spotted having a car park kick about with a bunch of youngsters after the game at Bridgnorth last month!

Meanwhile, he is enjoying his football on the field saying: “So far I’m very pleased with my move to Gresley. It’s a good standard of football and, like I said when I first moved here, Gresley is a very good, very friendly club.

“We’ve had a very good start to the season and we’ve been playing well but that’s because we’ve been working hard as a team.

“Everyone is working hard for each other and that’s what’s doing the trick for us at the moment.”
