Rovers suffer a cup of woe - Andy Parker – Burton Mail

28th September 1992
Gresley boss Steve Dolby lamented his side’s “basic errors at both ends of the field” after Rovers crashed out of the FA Cup on Saturday.

After the Moatmen’s winning run ended with a 4-1 home drubbing by Gainsborough, Dolby complained: “We gave bad goals away at bad times and we didn’t take our chances. We had a perfect start, coped well with their physical defending early on and got the goal we were looking for. But after that the game was always going away from us.”

Dolby was critical of the way his side defended after taking an early lead, saying: “At that stage the back four should have done their job. We should have been looking to pinch the game at 1-0. Instead we had to chase the game and the more we chased it, the more we gave away.”

The result was all the more galling for the Moat Ground club as the game attracted the season’s biggest gate so far – 748.

Dolby anticipates another tough test for his side when Welsh club Barri visit the Moat Ground on Saturday, saying: “I’m expecting a similar sort of game against Barri, who are one of the strongest sides in the division. I just hope we’ve learned something from the mistakes we made today.

“The team certainly shouldn’t need any motivating after the result today – they’ll want to bounce back quickly.”
