Gresley Rovers match winner Mick Taplin today fired back at criticism of the goal that sent Burton Albion spinning to a 1-0 Barclays Southern League Cup defeat at Eton Park on Tuesday.
Taplin’s 80th minute strike was described by Brewers’ boss Brian Kenning as a “fluke” and goalkeeper Nick Goodwin as a “shinner.”
But the Rovers front-runner said: “If Brian Kenning would like to specify the nature of goals before the second leg we’ll try to oblige. It doesn’t bother me which part of my anatomy the ball goes in off as long as the ball hits the back of the net. The fact remains that we deserved it.
“As for Nick Goodwin’s comments all I can say is that if his eyesight is that good that he can see the ball come off my shin from 20-odd yards away then I’m surprised he wasn’t able to save the shot.”
