Rovers hoping for limited success - Burton Mail

14th January 1993
Gresley Rovers are poised for the biggest off-the-field shake-up in their 110-year history.

Notices will be posted around the Moat Ground before Saturday’s FA Vase tie with Bridgnorth Town detailing moves aimed at putting Rovers on a commercial par with their major Beazer Homes League rivals.

The move to make the club a private limited company was given the go-ahead by members at the club’s annual meeting and is now proceeding following consultations with professional financial advisors.

After a four-week waiting period Rovers will come under the control of a five-man board of directors headed by current chairman Peter Hall and supported by a seven-man executive committee made up of current committee members.

The operation has been masterminded by development officer Frank McArdle who said today: “The club is now to apply to Companies House to become a registered company with a format that has already been approved by the Football Association at Lancaster Gate.

“The type of company we are forming will enable us to trade in all the areas that we currently trade in and make possible further development, investment and activities to help the club with its finances.”

Membership of the club will be open to all supporters at a cost of £1 after the 28-day notice period. No member – including directors who will be re-elected annually by the membership – will be able to hold more than a £1 stake.

Said McArdle: “The move will protect the things that have made Gresley Rovers the force that they are in non-league football – hard work and total commitment.”

Said Hall: “It is a major step forward for the club. It is the type of company that suits what has been happening for years at the Moat Ground. It keeps faith with the supporters and is a mark of the success of the efforts of both players and supporters over the years.”

The first board of directors elected unanimously by the committee, will be: chairman Peter Hall; vice-chairman Dennis Everitt; financial director Neil Betteridge; commercial director Frank McArdle; additional director Stuart Cox.

Gordon Duggins will remain as club president while the executive committee will consist initially of: executive secretary Nick Holmeshaw; fixture secretary Rod Summers; ground/security Stan Crockett, Pat Collins; social club manager Bruce Tamms; gate Alistair Rutherford; second tean Reg Shorthouse.
