Gloucester City may be heading for promotion from the Dr Martens Western Division, but all their hard work on the pitch could be ripped apart by an internal rift.
There is massive unrest within the squad at Meadow Park and this weekend, they threatened to hit the self-destruct button with a mass walkout. Following their 1-0 victory at high-flying Sutton Coldfield Town, City players were on the verge of quitting the club.
The players were due to get on a minibus to Coles Lane but when they met at the Golden Valley, there was no transport arranged to make the trip and the players made the journey in their own cars, at their own expense.
The players are also upset at having to sell £20 worth of lottery tickets each week to fund their own wages - most of which comes straight out of their own wage packet.
"We have done our bit on the pitch winning the games and all we are asking is that the club are fair to us and act more professionally - this is the kind of thing you would expect from a Sunday League club," said a spokesman for the team.
"We are ready to go and we are sure that Chris [Burns, player-manager] will back us."
The players claim they are desperately trying to arrange a meeting with chairman Colin Gardner and the board of directors.
Gardner said: "I will not be held to ransom by any of the players - they will not blackmail me."
