Rovers seeking a sign - Andy Parker – Burton Mail

15th June 1993
Gresley Rovers are poised to capture the signature of Burton Albion reserve team goalkeeper Mark Wheatley.

Andy Moat boss Steve Dolby reckons the highly rated youngster will be aiming to replace Bob Aston as first choice custodian at the Moat Ground.

Said Dolby: “Nick Goodwin has reportedly signed a three year contract with Burton and Mark sees a better chance of getting a first team place at Gresley.

“Bob is reaching the veteran stage of his career and, while he will be with us next season to prove he’s capable of taking over when the times comes. It will put Bob under a lot more pressure than he’s been under and can only be a good move for the club.”

However, the signing looks like marking the end of the road for last season’s second string keeper Lee Rippin.

Said Dolby: “Lee’s welcome to come along and fight for his place, but there are only two keepers’ shirts up for grabs and he’s got to be aware of that. He’ll have to have a look at the situation and consider where he goes from here.”
