Captain Smith

17th July 2004
Matt Smith
Matt Smith
Defender Matt Smith has been given the Gresley Rovers captaincy for the clubs debut campaign in the UniBond First Division.

31 year old Smith joined Rovers at the start of last season from Solihull Borough after previous spells with Moor Green. The experienced defender started his career with Derby County before signing for Plymouth Argyle. He went on to have a brief spell with Irish side Cork City but turned down the offer of a contract to join Burton Albion in the summer of 1994 where he was voted player of the year in 1995-1996

Manager Gary Norton speaking about his new captain said: "Matt is a natural leader both on and off the pitch. He is a model professional in every sense and very well respected by everyone involved at the club. His leadership qualities have always been evident to me and he was both honoured and delighted to have been given the captaincy for the coming season. He's very much relishing the challenge as skipper and he is particularly looking forward to helping the younger players to develop themselves further."
