Jamie Barrett

Gresley Rovers manager Gary Norton has secured the return of fans favourite Jamie Barrett back the Moat Ground from Hednesford Town.

Barrett had been a long-term target of Pitmen's manager Chris Brindley and turned down the chance to make the move part way through last seasons campaign. However, Brindley's persistence paid off in the summer and Barrett moved to Keys Park.

The 22-year-old played over 150 games for Rovers, including 56 appearances last term scoring seven goals and produced his best form in his three-year spell at the Moat Ground.

Barrett has played in most of Hednesford's Conference North games so far this term but has failed to settle at his new home and was apparently not enjoying his football. Manager Gary Norton is delighted that last seasons joint player of the year is to return to the Moat. He commented: "It seems that Jamie hasn't been enjoying his football at Hednesford despite him playing regularly. We told him when he left that he would be welcome home at any time and left it at that. He spoke to Alan Titterton a couple of weeks ago and Alan sensed he wasn't enjoying things at Hednesford and advised me to keep an eye on things. We put in an approach to Hednesford last week and Jamie signed for us on Saturday night. Its great to have him back at the club."

Ironically Norton admits that the return of Barrett will give him a selection problem due to the form of Carl Slater and Mickey Lyons together with the fact that Nicky Carter has just resumed training after his recent calf injury. He added: "Jamie's' return does give us a selection headache but what do you do when a player of Jamie's calibre is available? He was top drawer for us last season and the whole club is delighted he's back. He knows we have been playing quite well and as such will have to fight for his place in the side but he has a professional attitude and will wait for his chance. He's a class player and his return will really increase competition for places in the midfield area."
