UniBond League News Issue 15

19th November 2005

Premier Division leaders North Ferriby United had their lead at the top trimmed to four points after they could only draw at relegation threatened Ilkeston Town And it could have been much worse as they had to come from behind to even claim the point. Second place Frickley Athletic, however, bounced back from two successive away defeats to halt fifth position Witton Albion's recent impressive run of five straight victories in its tracks. Veteran striker Leroy Chambers was the man responsible with both of Athletic's goals in a 2-0 win. In joint third, four points adrift of the top two, are Marine and Burscough after the latter won 2-1 at Whitby Town and completing the top six is Bradford Park Avenue who slipped up in midweek when held to a 1-1 draw by Wakefield-Emley and the latter drew again on Saturday when their game against Radcliffe Borough was goalless. The point, however, was enough to lift Borough out of the bottom two. Farsley Celtic appear to have come up with a gem in taking Bradford City's out of favour young striker Kevin Sanasay and the youngster scored in both Celtic's games this week to add to a goal on his debut last Saturday. His goal in midweek earned the "Celts" a point against Whitby Town and he netted one of the Leeds side's two goals that overcame Prescot Cables at the weekend. One of the happiest teams on Saturday, however, will have been Runcorn FC Halton who have struggled for most of the season but have now moved up to the giddy height of eighteenth after registering their second successive win with their victims this time being fellow strugglers Gateshead.

The First Division's top two met on Saturday and it was Bridlington Town who rubber-stamped their recent impressive form despite Martin Thacker missing a first half penalty against Mossley who led at the interval. A double, however, from Paul Wilson in the second period with the winner coming as late as the 89th minute helped Bridlington, who only picked up ten points from their first nine games, extend their lead to four points. Fleetwood Town had the lower tier's biggest attendance of the season with over six hundred watching their encounter with Bamber Bridge but the home support were left disappointed after the Preston based outfit showed again just what a stubborn team they are to beat. "Brig" have now lost only one of their last dozen league outings and the goalless draw ensured Fleetwood didn't move in to second spot. Gresley Rovers, ninth last Saturday, enjoyed two 3-2 wins in the week beating Eastwood Town on Tuesday and then ending Colwyn Bay's run of nine games without defeat on Saturday to move up to fourth whilst Kendal Town also went above the Welsh club after beating Woodley Sports for whom it was third straight league defeat. In form Spalding United were only denied another win by an own goal four minutes in to stoppage time but despite grabbing the draw Ossett Albion are now eleven games since picking up all three points whilst Goole AFC are seven league games since a win after drawing with Kidsgrove.

Richards Goes At Ossett

Ossett Town's Steve Richards became the ninth UniBond managerial casualty of the campaign this week after parting company with the club by mutual consent. Richards has gone on the back of some poor recent results that has seen the Yorkshire outfit drop towards the relegation zone. Ossett's Football Executive Phil Thompson, however, was keen to acknowledge that Richards left with the club in a much healthier position than when he took over two years ago.

Assistant Manager Steve Kittrick takes charge in a caretaker capacity. As well as being assistant to Richards at Ossett Kittrick also worked under him at Goole and has managed Northern Counties East League side Glasshoughton Welfare in his own right.

First Division Clubs Taste Success

First Division clubs tasted success in Tuesday evening's FA Trophy replays with Clitheroe and Kendal Town both putting out Premier Division opposition but AFC Telford United hit back for the top tier with a win at Goole AFC. Warrington Town's victory in the all First Division tie against Bridlington Town gives the First Division seven of the eleven UniBond clubs still left in this season's competition as Kidsgrove Athletic were successful in a protest they lodged against Gateshead playing an ineligible player in the tie last Saturday that the North East side had won 1-0. The FA heard the protest on Thursday and removed Gateshead from the competition.

Two of the four remaining Premier Division sides, Marine and Blyth Spartans, have been drawn against one another. The two other top tier outfits still standing both have tough ties although Farsley Celtic will have home advantage when they take on Nuneaton Borough. AFC Telford United, however, have to travel to Worksop Town.

There will be at least two First Division clubs in the First Round Proper which is scheduled for Saturday, 17th December. Clitheroe, who won a penalty shoot out against Ossett Town in Tuesday's replay, will host Woodley Sports whilst Warrington Town, two down against Bridlington Town last Saturday with five minutes to go, completed their come back on Tuesday and are at home to Kidsgrove. Of the three remaining First Division sides Fleetwood Town have an attractive home tie against Alfreton Town but Kendal Town and Mossley are both on their travels with the Lake District side making a long haul to Worcester City whilst Mossley visit Vauxhall Motors. The ties are to be played Saturday, 26th November.

Burscough Bow Out Of Fa Youth Cup

Burscough, the sole remaining UniBond survivors in this season's FA Youth Cup, bowed out of the competition on Tuesday when they went down 3-0 to Huddersfield Town. The young "Linnets", however, were far from disgraced hitting the woodwork twice and coming close on several other occasions.

Woodley Sign Bailey

Woodley Sports' latest signing Alan Bailey who scored after just nine minutes on his debut last Saturday in his side's FA Trophy win at Bishop Auckland can claim to have a goal against Manchester City to his name. A former City trainee, Bailey later played for Macclesfield Town and Stockport County in the Football League and whilst playing for the latter the 27 year old found the net against City in their 1999/2000 promotion season.

O'Connor Back With A Bang

Gresley Rovers' leading goalscorer Aaron O'Connor came back with a bang on Tuesday evening when he netted a brace against Eastwood Town to lift his side in to fourth spot as they challenge for promotion from the First Division. O'Connor has been out injured for four weeks during and how his side have missed him. The 22 year old contract player had shot to the top of the First Division scoring charts with eleven goals but during his absence Rovers had lost four matches on the bounce prior to Tuesday's win at Eastwood.

Rubbing salt in the wounds for the home side was the fact that the other Gresley goal came from former Eastwood defender Matt Millns who was recently the subject of a tribunal after the two clubs failed to agree a fee for the transfer of his services.

Albion Resigned To Losing Killock

Ossett Albion seem to have come a step closer to losing their sixteen year old starlet Shane Killock who has recently rocketed through the club's junior ranks and in to the first team and subsequently in to the Huddersfield Town Academy side. His first appearance for the "Terriers" Academy came in a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United last weekend and resulted in him picking up the Man of the Match award along with promotion to Huddersfield's reserve team for a midweek friendly. Albion Chairman Neville Wigglesworth said: "The way things are going for him we are already resigned to losing him to the full time professional game".

Cheltenham Don't Forget Their Pedigree

North Ferriby United announced this week that they have been able to agree a "sell-on" agreement with Cheltenham Town over the recent move of striker Gary Bradshaw despite the fact that Bradshaw was a non-contract player with the UniBond club and therefore placing the "Robins" under no financial obligation what so ever to Ferriby. The two clubs are also looking at the viability of a friendly fixture some time in 2006.

Ferriby Chairman Les Hare said: "Cheltenham have conducted their dealings with us over Gary Bradshaw in exemplary fashion and they have not forgotten their own very recent non-league heritage. They have been very magnanimous in agreeing a sell on deal. We wish them and Gary every success in the future".

Celtic On The Map At Last

It has taken almost twenty years but Farsley Celtic are now officially on the map. After years of negotiations between the club, Leeds City Council and its Highways Department new direction signs have sprung up recently on both the ring roads and local roads approaching the "Celts" Throstle Nest home in Newlands which means visiting fans will not have to ask for directions any more.

Farsley Chairman Andy Firbank said: "It has taken my predecessors many years and myself and my colleagues five further years to get the signs up. All that visiting supporters and other visitors to the facility and its adjoining sports centre have to do now is to look out for the brown visitor attraction signs which will guide them to the ground. In years gone by we have had little in the way of signposts to the ground and it has proved difficult for visiting supporters to find us. Hopefully it will now be a lot easier for them".
