Review Of The Day
Last year's beaten UniBond League Cup finalists, Whitby Town, moved in to the last eight of this season's competition with an excellent 3-1 away win at Guiseley where they had been a goal down. Premier Division leaders North Ferriby United shipped four goals for the third game in succession as Farsley Celtic returned to winning ways after last Monday's blip whilst Radcliffe Borough, Runcorn FC Halton and Witton Albion all moved through with 1-0 away victories as did First Division Eastwood Town at top tier Wakefield-Emley. Completing the last eight are Marine and Stocksbridge PS. On the weekend they would have been entertaining Manchester United had they overcome Burton Albion in the 2nd Round Proper of the FA Cup, Burscough travelled to Prescot Cables in the First Round of the UniBond League President's Cup but at least they had the small consolation of moving in to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win. In the same competition First Division Brigg Town accounted for Premier side Gateshead but Ilkeston Town, Lincoln United and Matlock Town all pulled rank on the lower tier. Bradford Park Avenue, Colwyn Bay and Mossley complete the last eight. In the Chairman's Cup Ossett Albion found the goal trail at last with a 4-1 defeat of Shepshed Dynamo whilst the other two all First Division affairs went to Bamber Bridge and last season's beaten finalists Woodley Sports. In the one remaining tie high-flying Frickley Athletic accounted for First Division Rossendale United. In the one Premier Division fixture Ossett Town came from 4-1 down to grab a point with a goal spree in the last eight minutes against Blyth Spartans whilst Chorley moved to the fringe of the First Division play-offs after defeating bottom club Bishop Auckland in the only First Division game.
Glendon Steps Down As Director At Radcliffe
Long serving Radcliffe Borough manager Kevin Glendon has stood down as a Director of the club. He took the decision after consultation with the Chairman Mr Bernard Manning Jnr in a move that is designed to allow him to concentrate more on the Commercial and playing side of the club. On the resignation which sees Glendon end a ten year stint on the Board, Mr Manning said "Kevin felt the time was right to remove himself from the Board and the many roles he has had to undertake at the club which is a lot bigger than people think and involves a number of areas that other clubs do not have". Glendon himself said "It was beginning to drain me and I felt the time was right to devote a lot more of my time to my family and home life".
In And Out At Telford
AFC Telford United have taken Shrewsbury Town's Spanish front-runner Marco Addagio on a month's loan. The 18 year old who hails from Malaga made five appearances last season for the "Shrews" but the "Bucks" have lost the services of Neil Howarth who made over 400 Football League appearances, appeared in three Conference winning sides and played in the 1996 FA Trophy Final. He has been released from his contract with Telford to take over as assistant-manager at Kidderminster Harriers.
Four UniBond Clubs In FA's Search For All Time Fa Cup Heroes
Four UniBond League clubs, Blyth Spartans, Bishop Auckland, Chorley and Runcorn FC Halton are included in an elite group of 33 semi-professional clubs that the Football Association have selected to nominate players from whom the public will be invited to name their own FA Cup Legends team to help celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the FA Cup.
Each of the 33 clubs are asked to nominate a goalkeeper, one defender, one midfielder, one forward and a manager from their own most memorable, most idolised and successful FA Cup heroes.
From the 625 names submitted a panel of FA Cup experts headed by Sir Trevor Brooking will shortlist 125 - 25 for each of the categories. The FA.com will then begin a month long search for the final all-time team by asking visitors to their website to select their own team and manager. Fans taking part in the competition will be given the opportunity to win two tickets to the 2006 FA Cup Final and will also be invited to unveil a special plaque at the new Wembley Stadium commemorating this unique team.
Several former UniBond League clubs with great FA Cup fighting traditions during their time in the League are also included with Altrincham, Barrow, Northwich Victoria and Scarborough making the list whilst other former member clubs invited to make submissions are Gainsborough Trinity, Kings Lynn and Worksop Town.
Ilkeston Look To Carruthers
Ilkeston Town have signed 33-year-old striker Martin Carruthers on a month's loan from Grantham Town as player-manager Nigel Jemson looks to boost his side's goal scoring rate. Carruthers, who started his full time career at Aston Villa where he emerged from the club's junior ranks to make four first team appearances, has over a century of goals to his name in the Football League. A journeyman whose clubs include Stoke City, Peterborough United, Darlington, Southend United, Scunthorpe United, Macclesfield Town, Boston United, and Lincoln City plus loan spells at Hull City (where he netted six times in thirteen outings), York City and Cambridge United, his most successful spell came perhaps at Scunthorpe where he scored 34 goals in just 86 appearances. Ilkeston, however, will have to conduct their battle against the drop without influential midfielder Scott Bonsall who will be out for the rest of the campaign with cruciate ligament injuries suffered when his knee was dislocated against Witton Albion in September. Doctors have told the player his ligaments have not healed and that he could require further surgery.
A Long Wait
Ashton United defender Dave German may well have set a UniBond League record in last Monday's game against Marine. His 84th minute strike was his second for the club with the first having come against Farsley Celtic almost ten years to the day previous - surely one of the longest gaps in between scoring for the same club in the UniBond League. In fairness, the defender has been appearing for Macclesfield Town, Leigh RMI, and Stalybridge Celtic since his first strike. Another irony in the game against Marine was that the player with most appearances for Ashton on the pitch was playing for the "Mariners"! Steve Hollis made more than two hundred appearances for Ashton before moving on to Accrington Stanley, Lancaster City and now Marine.
