Review Of The Easter Period
All the top sides apart from Farsley Celtic, who only had one league outing and won 1-0 at Witton Albion on Easter Monday, dropped points during the Easter programme and the run up to it. Blyth Spartans, however, despite a surprise defeat at Ossett Town bounced quickly back with three wins in four days to go level at the top with Frickley Athletic who drew with long time leaders North Ferriby United on Good Friday. The latter's title hopes have now blown up having taken only three points from their last half dozen games. Marine, too, had drawn an Easter blank until winning at Burscough on Easter Monday to just about keep themselves in the hunt. At the bottom Runcorn FC Halton's youngsters seem to have collapsed conceding eight goals in both games to the two teams immediately above them, Radcliffe Borough and Bradford Park Avenue and seven to AFC Telford United. In the First Division all the top nine clubs dropped points but mainly cancelled one another out and Mossley continue to lead by two points from Kendal Town with Fleetwood Town a further four points adrift but with a game in hand. Woodley Sports and Gresley Rovers look set for the play-offs but the last play-off spot is up for grabs although Stocksbridge PS with their games in hand look favourites to take it. At the bottom Bishop Auckland are relegated but Spalding United with eight points from their last four games are making a good fist of their escape act although they are now rapidly running out of games. And finally, congratulations to Eric Whalley and his Accrington Stanley side on their elevation to the Football League just six years after winning the UniBond First Division title!
Avenue Set Records
Bradford Park Avenue's 8-0 win over Runcorn FC Halton in the run up to Easter was the club's biggest ever in semi-pro football eclipsing their 7-0 success over Gateshead in April 2002 and equalled the club record for a league match set in 1925/6 in a Football League Third Division North fixture against Walsall. Tom Greaves' four timer against Runcorn was the first time an Avenue player had scored four in a league game for forty years with the last player to do so being Bobby Ham during season 1965/6 in a 6-1 Football League victory over Newport County. Avenue then celebrated their 600th Northern Premier League fixture on Good Friday with a 2-0 win over Ossett Town.
Pie Challenge
With Chorley FC renowned throughout the UniBond League for the quality of pies at their Victory Park home their visit to Belper Town next Saturday will see a pie showdown. Local Belper butcher and match sponsor Jerry Howarth, who has won international medals for his black puddings, is keen to take the "Magpies" on and has organised a blindfold pie tasting for supporters of a range of pies supplied by each club! Belper have commissioned a trophy for the winner and with both sides camped safely in mid-table the pie challenge may well be the day's most vigorously contested event.
