UniBond League News Issue 38

6th May 2006
Review Of The Week

Farsley Celtic made amends for last season's Play-Off Final disappointment when they beat North Ferriby United 2-1 after extra-time in this year's Final. Earlier in the week they had travelled to MARINE and beaten their hosts with the only goal of the game just three minutes from time. After also narrowly losing in last season's First Division Play-Off Final Kendal Town were another side to again subject their fans to anguish but at least this time there was a happy ending. Their supporters endured the suspense of a penalty shoot out win against Stocksbridge PS in the semi-final and then on Saturday were biting their finger nails until Peter Smith scored the winner against Gresley Rovers in the 89th minute. The final cup competition of the UniBond season went the way of Blyth Spartans who lifted the Chairman's Cup by beating Ossett Town.

Unibond "Club Of The Month" Awards

The final UniBond "Club of the Month" awards of the season went to Blyth Spartans and Shepshed Dynamo respectively. Spartans, who were taking the accolade for the second time in three months, enjoyed a fantastic finish to the campaign to capture the title and the Chairman's Cup. Despite their mid-table position Dynamo put spokes in the wheels of all three top First Division sides beating Fleetwood Town, Mossley and Kendal Town in the final eight days of the season.

Unibond "Fair Play" Awards

Just two cautions in eight games during April not only gave Guiseley the April "Fair Play" award but also enabled them to overhaul Ashton United for the £1,000 first place in the season overall. With Ashton pocketing £750 for second spot Leek Town maintained their third position to win £500 but a bad month for North Ferriby United saw them lose the £250 for 4th place to Prescot Cables. The First Division monthly prize went the way of Shepshed Dynamo to help them consolidate third place in the season overall. Belper Town took the season's £1,000 first prize when previous leaders Colwyn Bay endured eleven cautions and one dismissal. The Welsh club still won £750 thanks to their earlier exemplary record whilst Chorley took fourth spot and £250.

Endsleigh Sports Insurance "Goalscoring" Awards

The Endsleigh Sports Insurance "Goalscoring" awards for April have gone to Farsley Celtic and Shepshed Dynamo with Celtic scoring 19 goals in the eight games played whilst Dynamo hit 17 goals in their seven outings to claim an April awards treble.

Jones Goes At Colwyn Bay

Immediately after the final game of the campaign Colwyn Bay announced the departure of manager Adie Jones. The Board was disappointed that the team did not sustain its challenge for promotion and felt a change was needed. The club are inviting postal applications for the position by 19th May to - The Chairman, Colwyn Bay FC, C/o NW Joinery, Builders Street, Llandudno, LL30 1DR
