In the First Division, new kids on the block Alsager Town got off to a dream start winning 4-0 at Bridlington Town and in what was generally a good day for the new clubs Cammell Laird and Buxton secured home wins.
Harrogate Railway Athletic secured a draw against Bamber Bridge with the only first timers to lose being Skelmersdale United who went down at home to the only goal of the game from Eastwood Town's Peter Knox. The relegated clubs had mixed fortunes with Bradford Park Avenue coming from behind to beat Warrington Town whilst Wakefield went down at Colwyn Bay and also had a man sent off. Goole AFC beat Shepshed Dynamo with virtually a new team as only two of last season's squad started the game but they were helped by the visitors going down to ten men in the 67th minute. Despite losing their manager on Friday Clitheroe shrugged their problems to one side to record a 3-1 win at Kidsgrove Athletic. Elsewhere Stocksbridge PS came out on top at Chorley whilst Belper Town and Gresley Rovers drew at home to Brigg Town and Woodley Sports respectively.
First Managerial Casualty
The UniBond League managerial circuit is well known for its casualty rate but there can hardly ever have been a quicker one than Mark Smitheringale's decision to quit at Clitheroe on the eve of the campaign. He had only recently appointed former Burscough number two Chris Stammers to be his Assistant and it was Stammers who stepped in to the breach to take charge of team affairs for today's trip to Kidsgrove Athletic and Tuesday's game at home to Chorley.
McGuire Turns Down Stockport To Stay With Lairds
With Liam Dickenson having turned in impressive displays for Stockport County since his move from Woodley Sports last January, the League 2 club again returned during pre-season to the UniBond League First Division to try to prise high scoring midfielder Jamie McGuire away from league newcomers Cammell Laird.
The former Tranmere Rovers professional trialled at County during the pre-season making four appearances and impressed enough to be offered a contract. But the 22 year old said "I was pleased with my performances for Stockport and really enjoyed playing against my former club Tranmere Rovers in particular. I was chuffed to be offered a contract but after weighing everything up I feel I have made the right decision in staying with Lairds". McGuire has the amazing tally of 74 goals from midfield in the last two seasons and has been with Lairds since their West Cheshire League days.
North West Chairmen Quit
The summer recess has seen two Club Chairmen quit. After a quarter of a century involved with First Division outfit Woodley Sports Ian Campbell stepped down saying he didn't feel he could take the club any further. He said "I suppose I've run out of enthusiasm but overall I've had a lovely time and leave the club in good shape and not owing a penny". Across the other side of the Greater Manchester conurbation Declan Callan has stood down after three years in the hot seat at Rossendale United due to business and family circumstances.
