UniBond League News Issue 6

16th September 2006
Bradford Park Avenue had the opportunity to go top with a home fixture on Saturday but it was their visitors Eastwood Town who moved in to second with a 3-1 win that left them just a point behind the leaders Buxton who were on FA Cup duty after overcoming Warrington Town by the odd goal in five on Tuesday.

Eastwood had hit five without reply in midweek against Shepshed Dynamo and their 3-1 success on Saturday at Avenue suggests they are running in to some serious form.

Four points in the week for Colwyn Bay sees the Welsh club climb to sixth. In the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round on Saturday the League had a dozen successes and drew four of the 23 ties against outside opposition. Where First Division clubs took on the top tier both Ossett Albion and Skelmersdale United achieved away wins against Ossett Town and Radcliffe Borough respectively whilst Kidsgrove Athletic held Leek Town. Hitting back for the big boys, however, were Gateshead, North Ferriby United and Marine who disposed of Rossendale United, Chorley and Clitheroe. The two all Premier Division ties saw Frickley Athletic win at Whitby Town thanks to a Remo Nesa treble whilst Guiseley edged out Mossley. Finally a word for Wakefield FC who can't win a point in the League but who claimed their second FA Cup win when beating Chester Le Street.

Unibond Clubs Progress In FA Youth Cup

Three of the four UniBond League clubs taking on outside opposition in this week's Preliminary Round of the FA Youth Cup made progress with the only losers, Stocksbridge PS, taking Stalybridge Celtic to extra-time and penalties before bowing out. Burscough, who have a fantastic record of reaching the 1st Round Proper of this competition in recent seasons, made a good start this time demolishing Lancaster City 6-0 whilst Ossett Town overcame Spennymoor Town by the odd goal in nine and Witton Albion won their local derby against Northwich Victoria 3-2. In the all UniBond ties Gresley Rovers 3-2 won at Eastwood Town and Prescot Cables were also successful on their travels but needed a penalty shoot out to oust Warrington Town.

The five winners are now joined in the 1st Qualifying Round by fourteen other UniBond League clubs with Burscough and Witton Albion's rewards for beating Conference opposition being a meeting between themselves at Witton. There are two other all UniBond ties with Gresley Rovers hosting Leek Town and Goole AFC travelling to North Ferriby United. The full draw as it effects UniBond clubs is as follows with the ties to be played week commencing 25th September -

Rimmer At The Double

Skelmersdale United's Steve Rimmer had a trip to the seaside he would rather forget on Tuesday when his side drew 3-3 at Colwyn Bay. The 27 year old managed the unusual feat of scoring twice in his own net and to compound his anguish he took only eighteen minutes to complete the double once he had put through his own goal as early as the seventh minute!
