UniBond League News Issue 11

21st October 2006
Eastwood Town continue to lead the First Division after denting 2nd place Buxton's 100% home record with a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.

That result enabled Bradford Park Avenue to close up on the top two thanks to a stoppage time winner against Bamber Bridge on Monday. After picking up just one point from their opening four games Rossendale United have moved quietly up the table and their latest win left Woodley Sports still searching for their first away win. Alsager Town have the opposite problem to Woodley and their midweek loss to Gresley Rovers leaves them with five home defeats in six games. Chorley took only their fourth point of the campaign when drawing with Clitheroe but it wasn't enough to stop them slumping to the bottom of the table as Wakefield enjoyed their first three pointer of the campaign at the fourteenth attempt when successful at Brigg Town and on Saturday followed up with a win at Goole AFC to drop Bridlington Town in to the bottom two

There was plenty of cup action this week but no joy for UniBond clubs in FA Cup replay action with Ossett Albion. Witton Albion and Matlock Town all going out - the latter after missing two penalties in a 3-2 defeat. Saturday saw eyes turn to the FA Trophy where the two Divisional leaders, AFC Telford United and Eastwood Town, met with honours finishing all square as the lower tier dished out some shocks none more so than Woodley Sports 6-1 win over Marine. Hard on the heels of that one came Cammell Laird's 4-0 success at Frickley Athletic whilst Skelmersdale United disposed of Prescot Cables 3-0. Bradford Park Avenue had North Ferriby United in trouble too only to lose a two goal advantage in stoppage time

Lodge Resigns At Chorley

Chorley are looking for their third manager of the season after Paul Lodge quit following last Saturday's 6-1 away defeat at Harrogate Railway Athletic. He had been in charge for just seven weeks following the resignation of former Aston Villa legend Shaun Teale.

Chairman Ken Wright said that Lodge had inherited a difficult situation and added: "Paul resigned after Saturday's match feeling that following a sequence of indifferent results his position had become untenable. He had taken over just four games in to the season and in an effort to turn things round had brought in a lot of young players. The UniBond League is a physical arena and players have to be strong to meet the demands of it but unfortunately many of the newcomers weren't able to meet those demands. Nobody hurts more than the manager when the side is losing games but nobody can wave a magic wand and put matters right. We now have to steady the ship and I am pleased that we have been able to call on two dedicated clubmen in defender Martin Clark and goalkeeper Phil Priestley who are both well respected figures in the dressing room".

Clark, who held the fort for two games when Teale resigned in August, will again take charge of team affairs assisted by Priestley and the duo got off to a good start with a point against Clitheroe on Tuesday evening.

Just two months in to the campaign Lodge becomes the sixth manager to depart the UniBond scene.

Bridlington Appoint Marshall

Struggling First Division side Bridlington Town have appointed Paul Marshall as manager relieving Chairman Peter Smurthwaite of the job. Earlier in the campaign Mr Smurthwaite had announced that he wished to relinquish the responsibility of team affairs which he had been forced to take on board after the resignation of previous manager Billy Heath towards the end of the last campaign.

Marshall began his playing days as a youngster at York City and although he didn't make it at Football League level he embarked on a very successful semi-pro career playing and managing Harrogate Town before moving across the town to manage Harrogate Railway who he took to a televised 2nd Round Proper FA Cup tie against Bristol Rovers which netted the club around £100,000 a couple of seasons ago. He moved on to Goole and gained them promotion to the UniBond League before parting company with them half way through last season. He then went on to be Assistant Manager to Clitheroe's Mark Smitheringale who, in turn, had been Marshall's number two at both Harrogate Railway and Goole.

Woodley Players In Car Crash

On arriving at Rossendale United on Tuesday evening Woodley Sports were rocked by the news that that three of their players who had been travelling by car to the fixture had been involved in a road traffic accident in the City Centre of Manchester en route to the game. Danny Queeley, Daniel Douglas-Pringle and Mario-Sergio Daniel, who between them had contributed eleven goals to the Woodley cause this term, were unable to continue their journey when their vehicle was a write-off after being hit by an uninsured driver driving through a red light. Daniel suffered an injured arm and all three were left badly shaken and were very lucky their injuries weren't more serious. All three were expected to be available for consideration for Woodley's FA Trophy tie at the weekend.
