Stocksbridge PS have gone three points clear of Buxton at the head of the First Division but after winning at Woodley Sports in midweek they were held 1-1 on Saturday by a resurgent Wakefield who have now gone five games without defeat after preventing the Steels making it nine wins in as many games.
Buxton were two up at Goole so will consider it two points dropped after the Vikings fought back to grab a point whilst other First Division highlights saw Gresley Rovers win at Ossett Albion with goals from two debutants and Shepshed Dynamo's Daryll Thomas hit a hat-trick in his side's 3-1 win at Warrington Town.
This week saw a lot of cup action and in the League Challenge Cup First Division teams performed well with three of the four clubs facing Premier Division opponents coming up trumps. Harrogate Railway, Bamber Bridge and Wakefield all beat top flight opposition with only Prescot Cables replying when they won a tricky encounter at Cammell Laird. The trend continued in the FA Trophy at the weekend with Cammell Laird, Woodley Sports and Cammell Lairds all accounting for Premier Division sides whilst Bradford Park Avenue's Neil Redfearn saw the special day of his 1,000th senior appearance marked with a win over Solihull Borough.
UniBond "Club Of The Month" Awards
The UniBond "Club of the Month" awards for October have gone to Burscough and Stocksbridge PS respectively. The Lancashire club scooped the Premier Division prize with an unbeaten record in the month of four wins and two draws. The lower tier award went the way of Stocksbridge who enjoyed a 100% league record of seven wins during October with their only defeat coming in the FA Trophy at Alsager Town. Their nearest rivals were Cammell Laird who were also unbeaten until the last day of the month when they lost at home in the League Cup to Prescot Cables but, in addition, had drawn one of their earlier league games at Shepshed Dynamo.
UniBond "Fair Play" Awards
The October UniBond One "Fair Play" awards have been won by Brigg Town with three cautions in six games.
The First Division season to date table has a new leader with Kidsgrove Athletic up from last month's second place and they hold a clear advantage over Colwyn Bay who replace Athletic in second. Last month's leaders Alsager Town have dropped to fourth after having ten cautions plus a dismissal in October. September's bottom club Clitheroe failed to improve their poor record and had no fewer than nineteen cautions and two dismissals in the past month leaving them as the only club in either Division with an average of three disciplinary points (based on one point for a caution and three points for a dismissal) per game.
The sponsors are putting up £5,000 in prize money at the end of the season with both Divisional winners receiving £1,000, the runners-up £750, third place teams £500 with fourth spot worth £250.
Parton Sets Club Record On Goole Debut
Former Scunthorpe United player Andy Parton set a club record when he made his debut for Goole AFC on Tuesday evening against Belper Town as he became the first Goole player either in the current club or the previous now defunct outfit to score a hat-trick on his debut. The 23 year old was a professional for five seasons with Scunthorpe but made only around twenty appearances and this season has been in the Conference North with both Worksop Town and Stalybridge Celtic.
Chorley Appeal For Anniversary Celebration
This month is the 20th Anniversary of Chorley's famous victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup and to mark the occasion the "Magpies" are holding a Dinner at their Social Club on Friday 17th November. The club want everybody connected with the win to attend but are struggling to contact the club's then President Dr P.Wren and two players Charlie Cooper and Wayne Roberts. The club is appealing to anyone who may know the current whereabouts of any of the three people concerned to get in touch with Chorley FC Supporters Club Chairman Mr G.Haslam on 01257 416247 (home) or 07761 581538 (mobile).
