Two home wins in the past week over Brigg Town and Bridlington Town left Buxton level on points at the top of the First Division with Stocksbridge PS who trailed for much of their game at home to Warrington Town on Saturday before taking all three points with two late goals to make it 28 points from the last thirty on offer.
Last week's third place team Eastwood Town, however, came unstuck at Bamber Bridge for whom Ryan Salmon scored a hat-trick in an exciting 4-3 win. With Cammell Laird and Bradford Park Avenue both winning Eastwood drop to fifth only a point ahead of Welsh side Colwyn Bay who hit Goole for five. After five home defeats on the bounce and five straight league defeats Alsager Town at last made home advantage count when they ended Wakefield's mini run of five games unbeaten and Skelmersdale United also enjoyed a home win but, unlike Alsager, their win over Brigg Town was their fifth successive home victory. After conceding 17 goals in their last four league outings Clitheroe kept Gresley Rovers down to just one goal but it was still enough to give the Derbyshire outfit the points. Two more home victories this week for Woodley Sports who can't win away took them clear of the bottom six where there was little change with only Kidsgrove Athletic picking up a point with a draw at Shepshed Dynamo. Finally UniBond interest in this season's FA Cup came to an end when Fleetwood Town lost at Salisbury City in a tie which attracted a crowd approaching 3,000.
UniBond Clubs Draw Thin End Of The Wedge
Clitheroe's excellent win over Southern Premier League club Halesowen Town in Tuesday evening's FA Trophy 2nd Qualifying Round replay gave the UniBond League nine representatives in the 3rd and final Qualifying Round. But the survivors didn't have a great deal of luck in the draw with no fewer than six of them on their travels.
Clitheroe's reward is a long trip to Kettering Town whilst Witton Albion also have some distance to cover to play Stamford. Elsewhere, Ilkeston Town are away to Hinckley United, Gateshead have a tasty looking encounter at former UniBond club Workington and 2003 FA Trophy winners Burscough have an attractive home tie against former Football League club Scarborough. The remaining four clubs are all from the First Division who, unusually, out number the top tier survivors by five to four. Cammell Laird, for whom this is a first stab at the competition, go to Leigh RMI and, after upsetting Premier Division high flyers Marine and Whitby Town on their artificial surface, Woodley Sports must now travel to Moor Green. The two other First Division clubs to survive, Bradford Park Avenue and Skelmersdale United are both at home to Nuneaton Borough and Farsley Celtic respectively.
UniBond League Challenge Cup Draw
The draw for the 2nd Round of the UniBond League Challenge Cup was made on Wednesday and it threw up three all Premier Division ties and the same number of all First Division games leaving ten matche where the lower tier can pit themselves against the higher echelons of the League. The First Division sides, however, are unlikely to be overawed at the prospect given the season's statistics so far. In the FA Cup and FA Trophy there have been twenty encounters between the top and lower tiers with the First Division more than holding their own with eleven victories whilst in the 1st Round of the League Challenge Cup Bamber Bridge, Bradford Park Avenue, Harrogate Railway Athletic and Wakefield FC all came up trumps against Premier Division sides with only Ossett Town and Prescot Cables replying for the higher level. The full draw for the ties which are to be played over the midweek's commencing 20th and 27th November is as follows -
Bamber Bridge v Prescot Cables
Belper Town v Grantham Town
Bradford Park Avenue v North Ferriby Utd
Brigg Town v Stocksbridge PS
Burscough v Kendal Town
Buxton v Hednesford Town
Eastwood Town v Leek Town
Fleetwood Town v Mossley
Frickley Athletic v Goole / Ossett Alb
Harrogate Rail v Wakefield FC
Ilkeston Town v Kidsgrove Ath
Marine v Skelmersdale Utd
Matlock Town v Gresley Rovers
Whitby Town v Ossett Town
Witton Albion v Clitheroe
Woodley Sports v Warrington Town
After beating Guiseley on penalties in midweek to reach this stage Bradford Park Avenue can look forward to another close encounter with a Premier Division outfit as they recently beat their 2nd Round opponents North Ferriby United in the FA Trophy 3-2 but only after the first game had finished 2-2.
Eastwood Town will host Leek Town after AFC Telford United's appeal against the result of their 11-10 penalty shoot out defeat at Leek in the 1st Round was dismissed at an appeal hearing held on Thursday evening. The appeal had been made on technical grounds surrounding the procedure used in the shoot out due to Telford being down to ten men. Telford Chairman Lee Carter said on his club's website "We always said the appeal was made as a point of principle and we certainly didn't want the appeal to offend Leek Town, the match officials or the UniBond League. Indeed we wish Leek the very best of luck in the next round".
