18th November 2006
Saturday proved to be a good day for the leaders with last week's second place side Buxton going five points clear at the head of affairs thanks to two away wins in the week whilst Stocksbridge PS, without a league game in midweek, were being held to a draw at Harrogate Railway Athletic despite taking the lead three times.
Buxton's delight was compounded when third place Cammell Laird were soundly beaten 4-1 at Gresley Rovers although fourth and fifth place sides Bradford Park Avenue and Eastwood Town both bounced back to win on Saturday after midweek set backs. Rossendale United added six points to their tally but relied heavily on Mark Drew who scored both goals in two 1-0 wins. On a sad note the game at Woodley Sports became the first UniBond game to abandoned due to morons when the referee took the players off after an arrow had been fired on to the pitch.
Chorley Approach Double Figures In 'Keepers
Still on the subject of goalkeepers Mark Thornley became Chorley's ninth 'keeper of a troubled season this week. He follows in the footsteps of Mark Threlfall, Phil Priestley, Mike Allison, Ryan Platt, Dave Fish, Brett Walker and Mark Canning whilst outfield player James Quadrio also went between the sticks for 28 minutes against Buxton on 9th September after Phil Priestley had been carried off.
Lairds And Skem To Host England Preparations
UniBond First Division clubs Cammell Laird and Skelmersdale United are to play host to the England Amateur side which is being represented in UEFA's Regions Cup by the Isle Of Man who earned the right to swop the three legs of Man for the three Lions of England by winning the National League System Cup. The team are to play the two UniBond clubs along with a friendly against Liechtenstein as part of their preparations for the Regions Cup which takes place in the Czech Republic in April.
Harrogate Plan New Stand In Memory Of Former Player
Harrogate Railway have announced that they have applied for planning permission to build a new stand between the dug-outs at their Station View ground. Although the new stand will only be for 38 seats it would accommodate more if the club hadn't decided to introduce disabled bays in to it. The development, if passed, will be named after former player Shaun Glennon who died in January after a long and successful career and will increase the ground capacity to 3,538 including 338 seats.
