27th January 2007
The First Division clash of the day was at Cammell Laird where table topping Buxton were the visitors and the game lived up to its star billing as the Derbyshire side came from two down to win and leave Lairds with one win in their last six league outings.
Eastwood Town kept up the pressure, however, with a 4-0 win at Wakefield and Stocksbridge moved back in to third with what was only their second success in nine games when they won at Bamber Bridge. The next three clubs, Bradford Park Avenue, Rossendale United and Colwyn Bay, all won to keep the play-off spots bubbling but Gresley Rovers lost ground when they were held at home by Bridlington Town who were only denied a first win in 25 games by a stoppage time equaliser.
Entwistle Makes Job His Own
Phil Entwistle's results since stepping in as caretaker-manager at Bamber Bridge following Andy Whittaker's Boxing Day resignation have so impressed the club's officials that he has been given the job on a permanent basis. Going in to today's game "Brig" were unbeaten in their four league games including three wins under Entwistle who has a long association with the Preston based club. He was in his second spell as Assistant Manager when serving with Whittaker after occupying a similar role under Tony Greenwood in the late nineties. He left for a short spell with Accrington Stanley and then slipped down the pyramid to help West Lancashire League side Fulwood Amateurs before returning to Irongate in the 2004/5 season as Whittaker's number two.
Entwistle has appointed Neil Crowe from the second string management team as his Assistant and the appointments continue a run of promoting from within as both previous incumbents Paul Byron and Whittaker were also appointed via this route.
Colwyn Bay Appoint Finley
Colwyn Bay have acted quickly to replace manager Peter Davenport who quit last week to take over at Southport. The Welsh club have named his replacement as Gary Finley who, in addition to having a wealth of UniBond experience both as a player and manager, has played and managed at higher levels. He made a name for himself as a player in the UniBond League with Marine, Warrington Town and Hyde United and appeared in the Football League for Doncaster Rovers. He was involved in the League of Wales with Aberystwyth whom he guided in to Europe as player-manager and had a short spell as a player with Colwyn Bay in 2004 before becoming manager of Witton Albion. His last job was as manager of Lancaster City in the Conference North until a financial crisis engulfed the Giant Axe club earlier in the current campaign.
Alsager Turn To Stokes
A third managerial appointment announced this week saw 36 year old player Dean Stokes take over as Alsager Town's manager just a week or so after previous boss Greg Clowes left for North West County League neighbours Newcastle Town. Stokes made around a century of appearances in the Football League for Port Vale and Rochdale in the late nineties and was signed as a player for Alsager by Clowes from Newcastle last season!
