10th February 2007
The sudden onset of wintry weather saw the entire midweek programme wiped out and Saturday didn't show much improvement only three First Division games surviving.
Colwyn Bay moved in to the last play-off spot with a 2-0 win over Shepshed Dynamo whilst Skelmersdale United ended Belper Town's fine run of five wins with a 2-0 victory that was their own first success in seven league outings. The one other game saw Clitheroe leapfrog their opponents Warrington Town with a resounding 5-1 win at the bottom end of the table.
All three League Challenge Cup scheduled quarter-final ties survived with Witton Albion continuing their fine recent league form with a 1-0 win over three times previous winners Marine. Also through to the semi-finals are Fleetwood Town who beat the top tier's bottom club Grantham Town 3-1 whilst Woodley Sports won the all First Division affair against Harrogate Railway 3-2 after extra-time.
Woodley Not Advertising
Woodley Sports are not to advertise their vacant managerial post following last week's parting with Ally Pickering. Chairman Peter Sullivan confirmed this week that former Chairman Ian Campbell and Pickering's Assistant Ian Nevison will continue as joint caretaker- managers until the end of the season after the side responded well to the new management team to win 3-0 at Bradford Park Avenue. The scorer of Woodley's goals in that match Adam Morning is understood to be being tracked by several Football League clubs and was again on the mark in today's cup-tie.
Jinx Strikes Again
The Chorley goalkeeping jinx struck again last Saturday when their latest custodian John Ogden didn't re-appear after the interval in last Saturday's game against Rossendale United due to injury forcing outfield player Neil Wright to go between the sticks. Incredibly Wright became the third Chorley outfield player this season to have to go in goal during a game and the fifteenth 'keeper in total used by the "Magpies" this season! Former Barnet player Neil Thompson was scheduled to become the sixteenth 'keeper this afternoon had Chorley's game at Kidsgrove gone ahead - a brave man indeed!
League Cup Tie Also Jinxed
Another jinx struck again on Tuesday when the League Challenge Cup Second Round tie between Matlock Town and Gresley Rovers was again postponed. The game was originally scheduled to be played 21st November but couldn't take place because of a County Cup tie. Two more attempts to play the tie on 28th November and 5th December fell foul of a waterlogged pitch. The teams did actually get underway on 12th December only for the referee to abandon the game at half-time because of floodlight problems. It couldn't be played on 19th December again because of a County Cup tie after which Christmas and New Year intervened.
The tie was rescheduled for Saturday, 6th January when the rest of the clubs remaining in the competition were playing the next round but again it fell victim to the weather. A County tie again prevented the game being moved to 9th January but on the next available date of 16th January it was once more rained off. More County Cup ties intervened on 23rd January and 30th January and when the clubs tried to get the tie out of the way last Tuesday the Matlock ground was frozen as it was on Saturday!
Skelmersdale Sign Keegan
League newcomers Skelmersdale United have signed midfielder Michael Keegan who has been playing in Welsh football with Rhyl and Connah's Quay since being released by Swansea City. The 25 year old, who was born on the Wirral but is now based in Liverpool, signed for Swansea straight from school and went on to reach double figures in Football League appearances with them before dropping out of the full time game in 2003.
Hat-Trick Heroes
Woodley Sports had an unusual hat-trick of hat-trick heroes last weekend. Adam Morning started the ball rolling for the first team with all his side's goals in a 3-0 win at Bradford Park Avenue. Reserve team front man Sam Walker followed up with another threesome as his side beat Ossett Town reserves 5-2 and not to be outdone Youth team striker Ashley Hunt completed the weekend hat-trick of hat-tricks when he bagged three against Altrincham in a 6-0 victory!
Avenue Management Team Earn Contracts
The Bradford Park Avenue management team of Phil Sharpe and his assistant Clive Freeman have been given contracts following the turn around they have brought to the club's fortunes since rejoining Avenue in March 2006. Then the club were fighting against relegation, a battle they ultimately lost with a last day defeat consigning them to the First Division. Sharpe and Freeman, however, did see their charges lift the UniBond League President's Cup and this term Avenue have been in, or on the fringes of, the play-off spots all season. Chairman Dr John Dean said "They have done very well since their return in March and have turned the club round. I believe the contracts show that we are going forward and I am confident of success in the coming years".
