UniBond League News Issue 27

17th February 2007
There were goals galore in the First Division where none of the top three could manage a win.

Leaders Buxton went down at home to Skelmersdale United, second place Eastwood Town lost at home for the second game running when Cammell Laird beat them 2-0 to join Stocksbridge PS in joint third after the "Steels" could only draw at Colwyn Bay who remain in the final play-off spot but have played six more games than Bradford Park Avenue who are in sixth only a point behind. Avenue would have ousted the Welsh side but lost a two goal lead at home to Ossett Albion and had to be content with a point. Goole AFC are also climbing the table quickly and their win at Chorley was their fifth on the bounce. There was an extraordinary game at Gresley Rovers where the first half was goalless only for Woodley Sports to emerge 5-4 winners! Both Paul Edwards for the home side and Woodley's Adam Morning scored hat-tricks whilst four of the goals came in the last seven minutes.

Brockie Sent Off On Railway Managerial Debut

Harrogate Railway Athletic's Martin Haresign became the twenty-first UniBond League managerial change of the campaign when he resigned on Thursday evening due to work commitments. His Assistant Vince Brockie was placed in charge of team affairs until the end of the season but on his debut as Harrogate manager at Rossendale United Brockie was dismissed to the stands at half time although he was still able to celebrate his first game with a resounding 5-1 away win to end a run of three successive defeats.

Jinxed Game Played At Last

The jinxed League Challenge Cup 2nd Round tie between Matlock Town and Gresley Rovers that should have been completed in November was finally played on Tuesday evening with the Premier Division side running out 4-1 winners. Matlock, who won the competition as recently as 2005, will now face Kidsgrove Athletic this midweek for the right to meet Whitby Town in the quarter final. Teams already through to the last four are Fleetwood Town, Witton Albion and Woodley Sports.

The first club through to a UniBond domestic final this season is Buxton who squeezed past 2006 League Cup Finalists Stocksbridge 1-0 in midweek to progress to the President's Cup Final - a competition in which they were successful in the inaugural final as long ago as 1982. It could well be an all Derbyshire Final with Gresley Rovers now due to meet Wakefield FC on Tuesday in the other semi-final.

Beleaguered Bridlington Town after going 26 league games without a win at last had something to cheer about when they reached the semi-finals of the Chairman's Cup with a 3-0 penalty shoot-out win over Shepshed Dynamo on Wednesday evening. They are joined in the last four by newcomers Cammell Laird who edged Alsager Town out with the only goal of the game on Tuesday. Still to contest the other semi-final berths are Ashton United who host Rossendale United and Guiseley who are at home to Ossett Albion with both those games scheduled for the forthcoming midweek.

Gresley Donate Proceeds

Gresley Rovers have donated their share of the pre-season Bass Charity Vase competition to a local multiple sclerosis sufferer Des Brown. The father of two is a former Tae Kwon expert but now requires around the clock attention and is hoping to raise enough funds to travel to Holland for pioneering stem cell treatment.

Manager Gary Norton said "We read about Help 4 Des in the local newspaper and we are very happy we have been able to get involved as we try to raise money for charities each year".

Incidentally, the Vase - a competition that was founded in 1889 with all money raised to go to medical related charities - is believed to be the most valuable trophy in English football.
