UniBond League News Issue 30

10th March 2007
Buxton went eleven points clear at the top of the lower tier with a 3-1 win at Rossendale United who after a bright campaign until the turn of the year have now won only one of their last eight games.

A former Buxton player Stuart Copnell shot Stocksbridge PS back in to second with all his side's goals in a 3-1 success at Goole taking his goal tally to eight in a handful of matches since his move a month or so ago. Losing ground were Eastwood Town who went down at Shepshed Dynamo but on the way up are Bradford Park Avenue who made it nine points from three games with a 4-0 win over Belper Town who haven't taken a point in their last five outings. At the bottom Chorley closed to within two points of third bottom Wakefield with a 3-1 home win at the expense of Gresley Rovers whilst Wakefield were losing at home to fourth bottom Warrington Town who have now put eleven points between themselves and the bottom three.

Fleetwood Town reached the League Challenge Cup Final with a hard fought 1-0 win over Witton Albion but will have to wait to find out who their opponents will be. Matlock Town will play Woodley Sports in the other semi-final after substitute Ian Holmes saved them with a stoppage time equaliser against Whitby Town to take the game in to extra-time at 2-2. A sensational extra-period saw the sides locked at 4-4 before Holmes popped in a winner in the 120th minute! The Chairman's Cup Final will feature Cammell Laird in their first season in the league after they won 4-1 at the League's bottom club Bridlington Town. The other semi-final was a much closer affair with Ashton United having levelled the score against Guiseley with three minutes left only for the Yorkshire side to grab a final place a minute from time!

Barlow Goes On Loan To Bamber Bridge

Fleetwood Town's veteran former Football League striker Stuart Barlow has gone on loan to Bamber Bridge for the remainder of the season. The 38 year old, who scored more than a century of goals in the Football League in around four hundred appearances for Everton, Oldham Athletic, Wigan Athletic, Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County, had just returned to Fleetwood after a couple of months out on loan at another First Division club Skelmersdale United.

Bridlington Take To Sunday Football

Beleaguered Bridlington Town took an instant liking to Sunday football this week when they scored their first league win since beating Woodley Sports on August Bank Holiday Monday. Since then Bridlington had gone 28 games without picking up all three points and they had to do it the hard way on Sunday as they went two down in their re-arranged home fixture against Kidsgrove Athletic. The win, however, still leaves them looking for a first win in the league on a Saturday this term!

Both Kidsgrove goals came from eighteen-year-old Byron Moore who has made a great start to his UniBond career. That was a third goal in two games since signing for Kidsgrove from Crewe on Work Experience.

Bentley Future In Doubt

The playing future of 35 year old Alsager Town 'keeper Scott Bentley seems in jeopardy after he broke his left hand in the first half of last Saturday's fixture at Warrington Town. Bentley, who has done the rounds of semi-pro clubs in the Staffordshire area, was only playing for Alsager on an unofficial "loan" from neighbours Newcastle Town as first choice 'keeper Phil McGing had picked up a hamstring strain in training. It seems certain that his season is over and Bentley, who once saved seven successive penalties earlier in his long career, is considering whether to even bother playing again.
