UniBond League News Issue 33

31st March 2007
First Division leaders Buxton were held by Brigg Town to have their lead cut to seven points from Eastwood Town who had two 1-0 home wins in the week.

Cammell Laird also moved closer to the leaders with a win at Ossett Albion that was their eighth on the bounce in the league and they are now nine points behind but have two games in hand.

Stocksbridge stay fourth despite a home defeat to Woodley Sports and Bradford Park Avenue bounced back from their midweek set back at Eastwood to beat Alsager Town to retain fifth.

Just outside the play-off positions but fast running out of games are Colwyn Bay and the Welsh side could ill afford to be held to a draw at Gresley Rovers who had lost five of their previous six games.

At the bottom, two defeats for Chorley at the hands of the teams immediately above and below them almost certainly condemn the "Magpies" to a bottom two finish but with Bridlington Town picking up four points in the week they now have the Lancashire side firmly in their sights five points behind but with two games in hand.

UniBond League Challenge Cup Final

A decision still has to be taken on where this season's League Challenge Cup Final will be held with both clubs involved, Matlock Town and Fleetwood Town, meeting with the League Management Committee tomorrow (Sunday) to discuss the matter.

The winners will take home £3,000 in prize money whilst the losers will have the consolation of a cheque for £1,000. Matlock Town, in addition to trying to win the competition for the second time in three years, are also attempting to become one of an elite band of just four clubs to have lifted the Cup on three occasions.

The other sides to have achieved this feat are Marine, Runcorn and Hyde United. Fleetwood have won the Cup on one other occasion back in 1971.

The two contestants had a warm-up for the Final when they met in a league fixture on Wednesday evening in a game that ended 1-1. It was both club's second match in 24 hours such is their backlog of fixtures and the point elevated Matlock in to the fifth and final play-off spot.

Fleetwood, too, despite currently being mid-table are not without a chance of making the play-offs with their games in hand.

UniBond League President's Cup Final

The UniBond League President's Cup Final will be held at Buxton FC on 23rd April 2007 when the host club will take on Wakefield FC. The winners will receive a cheque for £1,500 with the losers pocketing £500.

Buxton were the inaugural winners of this competition back in 1982 when they beat Goole Town in the Final but they haven't played in another President's Cup Final since whilst it is Wakefield's first appearance.
League Prize Money

Next weekend brings Easter and with it comes the run in for the finale of the season's long slog towards honours and the excitement of the play-offs or the despair of relegation.

But, in addition to that, almost every club will have something to play for in terms of cash with financial incentives to achieve the highest possible placing cascading down to fourteenth place in each Division thanks to the League's superb sponsors.

The First Division champions will take home £2,250, runners-up £1,750, 3rd £1,500, 4th £1,300, 5th £1,200, 6th £1,100, 7th £1,000 and 8th £900. Clubs finishing 9th to 14th will each receive £750 and the remaining clubs £625 each.

In addition to the above prize money the sponsors have put up an additional £5,000 to promote Fair Play with the winning club in each Division receiving £1,000, the runners-up £750, 3rd £500 and 4th £250.

New Chief Executive Appointed At Avenue

Bradford Park Avenue have announced the appointment of Robert Blackburn as the club's new Chief Executive following his recent purchase of the majority shareholding in the club from Vice President Frank Thornton.

Mr Blackburn is the Managing Director of various property related businesses and his companies will provide valuable sponsorships for the club.

In addition he will be bringing to the club some key members of his experienced management team to maximise the potential of the football side and he is also hopeful of strengthening the current Board from his vast numbers of contacts in the business community.

The appointment will see a significant six-figure sum of cash injected in to the club from a number of sources triggered by the appointment.

In addition, Mr Blackburn has already initiated talks with the Local Authority who own the ground to seek ways of improving the facilities for the benefit of players and supporters alike.

He said: "We are all committed to the twin aims of the club competing at a higher level and benefiting the community as a whole". Already Manager Phil Sharpe has made several significant signings.

Magpie Walks Dog 80 Miles

Chorley fan Darren Fishwick and his 20 month old Border Terrier Nellie are making the 80 mile journey for the club's final away fixture of the season at Belper Town on 21st April on foot!

The Magpie fan and his dog are setting off on Wednesday 18th April at 7.30am heading for a B&B in Stockport following the canals from Chorley to Wigan then through Leigh and in to Manchester before finishing the day in Stockport.

Thursday sees the intrepid pair walking down to Buxton with day three spent on the Limestone Way to Matlock. Saturday morning will see them walking the final ten miles to Belper.

He is funding the accommodation and refreshments himself and any money raised which he hopes will be in the region of £500 will go to the club.
