Review Of The Week
Witton Albion have gone top of the Premier Division with a 2-0 win at Ilkeston Town thanks to Guiseley dropping their first home points when held by Lincoln United to slip down to second place. Gateshead lost their 100% record when held at Matlock Town but are third with two games in hand on the top two whilst Fleetwood Town stay fourth despite dropping their first away points of the campaign when beaten at Eastwood Town who are joint fifth with Matlock. Elsewhere Ossett Town are still searching for a first home win after losing to Leek Town, Stamford picked up their first away points when successful at Buxton and there was a first victory of the campaign for North Ferriby United but the other club who changed managers (see below) this week, Frickley Athletic, crashed 7-2 at Ashton United after being two up!
Bamber Bridge and Curzon Ashton maintained their unbeaten starts with home victories and the latter are one point in front of the former at the top of the First Division North but have played a game more. The headline makers in this Division were Bradford Park Avenue who struck nine past Rossendale United whilst FC United of Manchester were held to a home draw by Woodley Sports. At the bottom both Clitheroe and Radcliffe Borough are still searching for a first home point after their latest defeats and Bridlington Town and Chorley have yet to register an away win with the latter losing 5-3 at Newcastle Blue Star. New leaders in the First Division South after Sheffield FC lost at home to Warrington Town are Retford United who took full advantage to go a point clear. The shock of the day in this Division was a first defeat of the season for Colwyn Bay who lost at Kidsgrove Athletic.
Two More Managers Go
The Premier Division's two bottom clubs going in to today's games, Frickley Athletic and North Ferriby United, parted company with their managers this week. Both clubs had gone out of the FA Cup last week to lower ranking opposition and both were looking for their first win of the campaign. Billy Heath's resignation left Frickley looking for their third manager in eleven months having taken over the reins after previous boss Gary Marrow had left for Grantham. Saturday's FA Cup defeat against Stocksbridge left Heath and his assistant Mark Carroll deciding they could take Athletic no further and today's team affairs were left in the hands of three senior players.
North Ferriby's FA Cup demise at Liversedge saw Chairman Les Hare and his Board relieve manager Neil Parsley and his assistant Trevor Storton of their positions with player Neil Allison, who had been in the running for job when it was originally given to Parsley, taking over. The 33 year old defender made around a century of appearances in the Football League for Hull City. Just five weeks in to the campaign and the tally of managerial casualties is already four with Leek's Paul Ogden having stood down due to health problems and Newcastle Blue Star's Andy Gowens making way for Tommy Cassidy.
