Review Of The Week
Only EASTWOOD TOWN of the top six won on Saturday but having won in midweek at GATESHEAD leaders WITTON ALBION still finished the week eleven points clear of FLEETWOOD TOWN who have three games in hand after being held to a goalless draw at MATLOCK TOWN.
GATESHEAD followed their midweek defeat with another on Saturday at HEDNESFORD TOWN and as a result lost third place to EASTWOOD TOWN who had a good week beating STAMFORD 3-0 on Tuesday and then coming from 2-1 down with less than half an hour left to win 5-2 against ASHTON UNITED.
Of the bottom three both LINCOLN UNITED and WHITBY TOWN picked up a point and it is all to play for in the relegation dog fight of all dog fights with PRESCOT CABLES in tenth spot only five points clear of the drop zone!
In the First Division North the top five appear to have the title and the play-off places between them but it would be a brave man who would predict the final outcome.
SKELMERSDALE UNITED continue to lead despite losing their unbeaten home record to third spot BRADFORD PARK AVENUE who have yet to concede a goal in three games under new boss Dave Cameron.
Second place CURZON ASHTON lost ground when they went down at GARFORTH TOWN whilst both BAMBER BRIDGE and FC UINTED of MANCHESTER left it very late to pick up all three points. "Brig" were 2-1 down with two minutes of normal time left at bottom club RADCLIFFE BROUGH but recovered to win in stoppage time whilst FC United let a two goal lead slip at home to NEWCASTLE BLUE STAR only to also win in stoppage time.
The First Division title race looks like RETFORD UNITED's after their nearest challengers CAMMELL LAIRD were hit for six at GRANTHAM TOWN on Saturday whilst the leaders themselves were edging out bottom club SPALDING UNITED 3-2.
The play-off places in this Division have really opened up and although Lairds, despite their six goal set back, seem assured of one of the spots the other three are anybody's guess with STOCKSBRIDGE down in tenth still having everything to play for.
At the bottom SHEPSHED DYNAMO's win over KIDSGROVE ATHLETIC leaves them looking safe with the latter and SPALDING UNITED now seemingly having to battle it out between them to avoid the one relegation place.
Former National Team Coach Takes Over At Woodley
Chris Willcock became the 22nd managerial change of the UniBond season after his side's 1-0 defeat at fellow strugglers Bridlington Town last week which dropped the Stockport based side in to the bottom two.
Taking over is the much travelled George Smith who has been the National Coach of both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. In addition he has been Director of Excellence at both Manchester City and Bolton and an Academy coach with Leeds and Stockport.
He has managed Stalybridge Celtic and Iceland's Keflavik whilst as a player he was with Manchester United, Birmingham City, Stalybridge, Altrincham and Buxton.
Former Bridlington Town manager Ash Berry has been named as Smith's Assistant.
