Butler Blast - Richard Whitehead – Burton Mail

10th September 1985
Gresley Rovers ace striker Dave Butler has been threatened with the axe by Moat Ground boss Frank Northwood.

Butler has been told to recapture his scoring touch in tonight’s F A Cup first qualifying round replay with Oldswinsford – or face a spell in the reserves.

Northwood has said he will not hesitate to replace the beefy front-runner if he does not start scoring again tonight.

Butler, brought to Rovers at the end of last season by Northwood, made a sensational start to his Gresley career and has scored five times in the opening nine games of the season.

But that striking rate doesn’t satisfy Northwood who is threatening another dip into the transfer market to find a new partner for Brian Beresford.

He said: “Butler just isn’t putting himself about as much as I want him to. He’s not working hard enough and if he doesn’t improve straight away he will have a spell in the reserves.”

He added: “In fact he’s lucky to be playing tonight because if we hadn’t had so many injuries he’d be out.”

Northwood has a number of headaches as Rovers bid for a place in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup at the Moat Ground tonight (7.45pm).

Brian Attley is still out as is Dixie Dearn while Ian Early is unavailable and Stuart Watkiss is doubtful with flu.

Northwood was unhappy with Saturday’s 2–2 draw at Oldswinsford and is threatening more changes.

“I know where to go an sign new players and I won’t hesitate to do that. I’m the boss and I’m going to crack the whip.”
