Pegg axed for Rovers tough match - Burton Mail

24th October 1985
Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood has axed defender Melvin Pegg for the Moatmen’s historic FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round trip to Leyton-Wingate on Saturday.

Pegg was brought off by Northwood during Saturday’s 4 – 3 Vase win over Immingham Town and the manager has not heard from him since.

“He gave me a few words of abuse when he came off and he hasn’t been in touch since, so I’ve left him out,” said Northwood.

Pegg has been one of the heroes of Rovers’ FA Cup run so far, but Northwood had no hesitation in dismissing him from Saturday’s plans.

“If a player can’t be bothered to train he’s not worth a place in the side. Melvin has all the ability in the world, but he need to have the right attitude as well. If he could put the two together he would be one hell of a player,” added Northwood.

And he revealed that he has not had Rovers’ highflying Vauxhall Opel League opponents watched.

“I have only had a team watched before one game in the past and when we turned up to play them they had seven different players in the side. I’ve found out a bit about their strengths, but apart from that I’m prepared to let them worry about us.”
