Sacked - Richard Whitehead – Burton Mail

18th November 1985
Roger Davies has been sacked as assistant manager of Gresley Rovers and told he can leave the club

Manager Frank Northwood made the shock decision at the weekend, but refused to comment any further.

The move follows weeks of speculation about Davies’ future after he has continually left out of Rovers’ side.

Ironically, it was the former Derby County and Leicester City striker who took Northwood to the Moat Ground in January.

At first they worked as a joint-management partnership, but at he end of last season Northwood was installed as manager with Davies taking the title of assistant.

Now the latest move has brought an angry response from Davies.

“I’m sick. I just couldn’t believe it when Frank called to tell me at the weekend,” said Davies.

“I brought Frank to the club to recruit players, but since then he has gradually taken over. I was prepared to stay on because I enjoyed coaching and working with the lads, but Frank has decided that’s not working either,” added Davies.

Northwood refused to comment any further and Rovers’ chairman David Nish, a former playing colleague of Davies, was unavailable for comment.
