Frank poised to axe Mac - Burton Mail

13th January 1986
Gresley Rovers manager Frank Northwood is planning to axe Saturday’s penalty-save hero Martin McNamara.

Northwood has stepped up his search for a new keeper despite McNamara’s injury-time penalty save which earned Rovers a 3 – 2 victory of Tividale.

The man he wants is Carl Austin currently with Milton United of the Staffordshire County League.

Austin is training at the Moat Ground tomorrow so that Northwood can assess his potential.

He said: “Obviously Martin was the hero when he saved that penalty but it doesn’t alter the fact that he should never have given it away and that he gifted them a second goal that let them back into the game.

“In certain games this season Martin has saved us from defeat but he is going through a bad spell.

“At the moment he holds the spot but I want to increase competition for places.”

Nicky Griffiths, signed last month from Wednesfield Social, is out three months with a leg injury.
