Earley can bridge the Attley gap - Rex Page – Burton Mail

21st March 1986
If a film were ever made about an unsung football hero, then Ian Earley would surely be screen-tested for the lead role.

For the Gresley Rovers full back has in his own quiet and assuming way emerged as a key figure at the Moat Ground this season.

Three years ago Earley, reviled by critical onlookers because of his lack of early-season form, walked out on Gresley for the modest pastures of Derby parks football.

It was a tragic waste of talent that had never been allowed to develop fully in the hurly-burly of West Midlands League football.

Now that moment of utter despair has been obliterated from the minds of most Moat Ground regulars by the eye-opening form of the Bemrose printer.

Earley, in fact was restored to the Gresley ranks last season, but it is during the current campaign that his true ability has forced its way to the surface.

Whether it was by chance or design, manager Frank Northwood gave Earley the chance to establish himself at fullback and the opportunity has been seized in superb style.
