Gresley Rovers new boy Gary Stevens was itching for action when he put pen to paper to complete a move from Southern League Willenhall last week.

And when Rovers home game with Tipton Town was frozen out on Saturday, Stevens quickly phoned manager Frank Northwood to request an outing with the reserves.

Northwood happily agreed and Stevens scored Gresley’s goal in the impressive 1-1 draw with league leaders Albright and Wilson.

“Gary enjoyed his game and felt he should have won it for us,” said Northwood afterwards.

“I was very pleased when he asked to play rather than train because it showed what a good attitude he’s got. And apparently he got on very well with the lads both on and off the field. I think he’ll be very good for Rovers.”

The signing of a player of Steven’s calibre ia a clear indication of Gresley’s go-ahead attitude.

The much travelled midfielder – who is still only 25 – was in the line up for an England non-league cap as recently as last season.

Stevens went straight into Rovers’ squad for the Tipton game and will keep his place for tomorrow’s FA Vase trip to Warrington – if the game’s on.

Warrington, surprisingly, are optimistic about the match-fitness of the pitch which has been covered in snow since last week’s goalless draw with Darwin.

That game gave Northwood the opportunity to send a representative to assess the qualities of a team that reached last season’s semi-final before bowing out to eventual winners Halesowen after a replay.

“He wasn’t very impressed,” said Northwood after hearing a detailed report on Warrington’s performance.

“Apparently they use a man-to-man marking system and don’t make many chances, although I’m told they should have won 4-0 on Saturday. Then again, it’s up to us not to give them any chances.

“They’ve got a good record and can play some football, but in the end it’s all down to how it goes on the day. I see no reasons why we can’t get through to the next round. You need a little bit of luck in these games, but my lads are confident of doing well. But I won’t make any forecasts – if you could predict football you’d win the pools every week.”
