Gresley Rovers have assembled their biggest-ever squad of players: and manager Frank Northwood aims to give them all a chance to help the club’s bid for the Banks’s League title this season.
Northwood said on the eve of tonight’s Moat Ground curtain-raiser against Chesterfield for the Derbyshire Centenary Rosebowl: “We’ve got something like 36 players signed on – there were 28 at training last night.
“They’ve never seen anything like it up at Gresley but it’s very healthy. There’s going to be a lot of competition and I think it’s frightened one or two of the boys.”
Northwood refuses to place too much importance on tonight’s game (7.30).
“It’s not the start of the season in earnest. I want to give everyone a chance to have a look at the full squad.”
The veteran boss has already been hit by a number of withdrawals from the squad announced yesterday.
Full back Martin Dick, a summer capture from Borrowash, has a badly cut foot while defender Barry Wilcox is also unavailable.
