You’re all welcome - Burton Mail

8th September 1987
Gresley manager Frank Northwood says he wants to hear the Moat Ground turnstiles clicking – moaners and all.

The appeal follows Northwood’s outburst after Saturday’s victory over Wolverhampton United when he attacked sections of the Moat crowd for their constant criticisms of his team.

And the Gresley chief insists he never told the fans to ‘get lost’.

“I did slam fans but I didn’t tell them to get lost – that’s the last thing I want. What I’m asking them to do is to be patient. I’ve always said that you can’t have any success without the fans.”

“After all, it’s the supporters who pay the money to get through the turnstiles. However, this season we’ve won four out of four this season and there are still one or two complaining – but they’d moan even if we won 6-0 every week.”

The Gresley manager spoke out in defence of left back Mark Bromley who bore the brunt of the fans’ barracking on Saturday.

“The fans were getting at Mark but I thought he had a superb game,” said Northwood.

Northwood has called on the help of giant defender Ray Skeemer, now recovered from a string of crippling injuries for tomorrow’s top-of-the-table clash away to unbeaten Lye Town (7.30pm).

Northwood has named an unchanged team for the Banks’s Premier Division match but includes Skeemer as substitute.

“I watched Ray play in the reserves the other night and he played ever so well,” said Northwood. “He’s raring to go and when I told him he was substitute he was delighted. It’s going to be a tough match with both teams going into the game unbeaten. But we’re determined to continue our winning start to the season,” said Northwood.
