Austin blow - Burton Mail

21st September 1987
Gresley Rovers biggest ever win in the Banks’s League was marred by the shock news that Karl Austin is leaving the club.

Austin played in Saturday’s remarkable 9-1 win at Oldswinford, where top-of-the-table Gresley stretched their 100 per cent record to seven games, then announced he was planning to pursue his career in America.

The news brought an angry reaction from Rovers’ boss Frank Northwood. He said; “Austin is going nowhere without the say so of Gresley Rovers. He’s on a contract with us until the end of the season and unless there’s something in this for us he can forget about it.

“I wish whoever has been talking to Karl would show their face because they had no right making an approach to him without our permission. We’ve treated Karl very decently, but the same can’t be said about the way the club is being treated.

“As far as I’m concerned Karl has played his last game for us – be he won’t be going to America unless there is a fee involved. I haven’t got a replacement at the moment, but I will have by the weekend. Our fans needn’t worry themselves on that score.”
