Daley out of Rovers return - Burton Mail

3rd November 1987
Gresley Rovers go into their second consecutive cup tie tonight – without the services of £million midfielder Steve Daley.

Daley, whose spectacular goal helped Rovers ease past Ilkeston Town in the Derbyshire Senior Cup on Saturday, has suffered a recurrence of the ankle injury that forced him to limp out of the previous Tuesday’s Banks’s League game against Blakenall and misses the League Cup clash at Hinckley United (7.30).

Rovers will be aiming to record their second win at Middlefield Lane this season and a place in the Second Round of the competition they came close to winning last season, losing to champions Atherstone in the final.

But as Gresley seek a repeat of August’s 4-1 league win it is unlikely that former Hinckley defender Nick Sales will start the game against former colleagues.

Manager Frank Northwood has experimented by dropping both skipper Steve Dolby and giant stopper Ray Skeemer from the centre of his defence recently but it seems likely that his brief flirtation with Sales as sweeper will end tonight.

Certain to miss out is striker Martin Devaney, who is unavailable for the next fortnight.
