Manager hoping for shock - Burton Mail

18th December 1987
RSSC Ransomes boss Tony Lees is counting on the special atmosphere of the Moat Ground to propel his side to FA Vase glory tomorrow.

Lees brings his Tolly Cobbold Suffolk League outfit to South Derbyshire for the third round replay, still cherishing hopes of springing a major surprise on Gresley Rovers.

And he reckons just playing at Gresley could be all the motivation his players need.

“We very rarely get the chance to play on a proper enclosed ground so that alone will lift the players,” said Lees. “It is something completely new to us. Just walking into a proper ground can make the players feel more professional and help them raise their game.”

The Ransomes squad will be travelling up to stay overnight at a Leicester hotel and that in itself is yet another novelty for players who treated last Saturday’s game like a cup final.

But Lees’ major concern will be the state of the pitch which is certain to be heavy after the pounding it took during Tuesday night’s game against Hinckley and this week’s rain.

“I will arrive early and have a look at the pitch before deciding how we will play,” he said. “Usually we try to play football and enjoy our game but that may not be possible if the pitch is heavy.”

Nothing, however, can diminish Ransomes’ determination to make the most of their taste of the big time.

“Saturday was a big day for us and getting a replay a huge bonus,” said Lees.
