No slip-ups this time - Andy Parker – Burton Mail

15th January 1987
This time, let’s get it right.
That’s the message from Gresley Rovers skipper Steve Dolby as his team prepares for tomorrow’s big FA Vase tie at the Moat Ground.

Northampton Spencer of the United Counties League are the visitors and while the setting and the circumstances are totally different, Dolby cannot help but think back to the last time Rovers reached the final 32 of the competition.

That was 12 months ago when Gresley travelled north to Warrington, led 3-2 with 15 minutes left and eventually returned bitterly disappointed after a 4-3 defeat.

“Everybody will remember last year’s game as the most disappointing of their career with the club,” Dolby said. “That just makes us more determined to get it right this time. People are saying we’re expecting to win but it’s going to be one hell of a battle. We’ve heard they’re a weakish side but they said the same about Ransomes in the last round and we needed a replay to beat them.

“They’re going to battle tomorrow and our attitude has got to be right. There’s going to be a big crowd and that could put pressure on us, but we know we’re good enough to win. And make no mistake we’ll battle as hard as them.”

Dolby believes that Rovers may be coming back into form at just the right time for their Wembley bid.

“We’ve not been playing as well as we can over the last month or so and that’s given us a few doubts. But now we seem to be coming back to the boil. Brian Beresford has come back after a long injury lay-off and that’s got to be a boost. But we’re not thinking about the last 16 yet, we’ll get tomorrow’s game out of the way first.”
