Moatman on the trail of striker Bob - Burton Mail

16th June 1988
Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood has put Bromsgrove Rovers striker Bob Askey at the top of his summer shopping list.

Northwood has already spoken to the former Macclesfield Town player and expects a decision next week.

“Bob seemed very impressed with our set-up, but Bromsgrove want to keep him and Alvechurch are also interested,” said Northwood.

The Gresley manager added: “I’ve been around long enough now to know that you don’t get too confident about a new signing until the players put pen to paper.”

Rovers are anxious to recruit Askey as a replacement for last seasons top scorer Martin Devaney who has joined Beazer Homes League newcomers Tamworth, along with defender Mark Bromley.

They also meet Alfreton striker Richard Denby for talks this weekend.

Northwood has already completed a crop of new signings and is ready to make further dips into the transfer market.

Talented 23-year-old full back Dave Beattie, chased by Burton Albion last season during Brian Fiddler’s reign as manager, has agreed to make the move from Wednesfield Social; utility player Steve Ashley, 26 has been snapped up from Oldbury United and winger Ian Staley has been re-united with Gresley after two seasons with Stapenhill.

Beattie began his career with Wolves after trials with Derby County, Liverpool and Gillingham, but quit League football after becoming a casualty of the Molineux cash crisis four years ago.

Ashley, who can play in the back four, midfield or attack, had spells with Smethwick Highfield and Wolverhampton United before joining Oldbury.

Belper Town midfielder Jack Oldershaw, drafted in by Northwood to bolster his injury-hit side at the end of last season, has decided to stay at the Moat Ground.
