Al standing by his man - Andy Tilley - Burton Mail

Gresley Rovers' caretaker manager Alan Titterton has pledged loyalty to keeper Ian Wright - after signing a replacement.

Errors from Wright and others between the sticks had been a constant source of irritation to previous manager Brian kenning before his dismissal last week.

And reserve team boss Titterton, given temporary charge of the first team while Kenning's replacement is sought, took steps to solve the problem by signing Phil McGring, released by Witney Town, on recommendation of Moat scout Bill Bishop.

But it was Wright who started Saturday's FA Umbro Trophy second round tie with Rocester and Titterton, who has made no secret of his desire to take on the job full-time, said the barnstorming manner of Rovers' 4-0 home victory meant he had no grounds to sideline the in situ keeper.

In the run up to tonight's Dr Martens Cup first round clash with Hinckley United at the Moat, Titterton said: " I took Ian to one side on Saturday and told him we'd bought another goalkeeper but his performance at the weekend meant there was no way I would leave him out.

"On Saturday afternoon I asked the players to play for me and they didn't let me down- four goals was just beautiful - and now it's my turn to show loyalty."

Titterton's squad has been weakened by the unavailability of Steve Coates and Richie Gardner's hamstring strain but frontman Kevin Allsop should be available, despite earlier fears to the contrary, and Chris Allum, signed from Stapenhill, has also been named in the squad.

Rovers from: Wright, Broadhurst, Bluck, Warren, Middleton, Wardle, Peters, Cheetham, Sidhu, Tucker, Reynolds, Roberts, Allsop, King, Devine, Allum.
