No-one was more pleased after Gresley Rovers’ 12 goal blasting of Wednesfield Social this week than nippy midfielder Andy Moore.

Unlike some of his much-travelled colleagues, 27-year-old Moore has only played for three senior clubs in his career.

He spent eight years with Midland Combination outfit New World, “winning practically everything” before the club disbanded.

Last summer Moore was one of a crop of Moat Ground newcomers after established a reputation around the West Midlands with his local club - Wednesfield Social.

Says Moore: “I only live half a mile or so from Wednesfield’s ground and they had a very good side there when I joined them. It could have been a good club – we finished third the season before last but things started to go wrong and the side crumbled.”

That put the midfielder, who runs his own decorating business, on the road to the Moat Ground along with colleague Dave Beattie, another ex-Social player.

And as Rovers continue to paint the town – or more specifically the Banks’s League – red, Moore believes his “tremendous” move to the Moat was the best of his career.

“Although it’s quite a way for me from Gresley it only takes me 45 minutes by car and that’s well worth it. I’m enjoying it. The atmosphere is better, the facilities are better and we’ve been playing well together.

“We got a very good point at Rushall last week and that meant we’d played all of the top sides and done well against them. So I think we’re sitting pretty at the moment.”

No-one from Wednesfield could argue that point. Gresley gave the Black Country side two six-goal drubbings in the space of four days this week to reinforce their top-of-the-table position in the league and earn a league cup encounter away to old foes Oldbury United in the next round of the league cup.

And Moore, who scored in both of the Wednesfield goal romps, is aiming to add extra goals to his total as Rovers enter the FA Vase fray at West Midlands Police tomorrow.
