It’s a mugs game! - Burton Mail

6th February 1989
Gresley skipper Dean Page could be facing suspension – because of a facial expression.

Page was booked for the fourth time this season after a tangle with Matlock Town’s Phil Walker during the two sides’ Derbyshire Senior Cup quarter final.

Although it was only a YELLOW card for Page Rovers chief saw RED when he read referee Brian Rudkin’s report of the incident.

Seethed Northwood: “The ref’s report says he booked Dean because he LOOKED aggressive. I simply find that unbelievable. In all my years in football I’ve never seen such a disgusting statement.

“The terrible thing is that, because it was Dean’s fourth booking of the season, it could lead to a suspension. That would be a farce.”

There was certainly no shortage of work for Saturday’s referee, John Boulton of Sparkhill. He sent off two Hinckley players and booked three.
