New boys explodes at Gresley - Andy Parker – Burton Mail

15th September 1989
Frank Northwood completed another transfer coup this week then declared: “Watch out for the Moat Ground’s Billy Bremner!”

Northwood was referring to a diminutive 19-year-old who began his Gresley career with an explosive emergence from the substitutes bench against Tividale on Saturday.

Rovers, weakened by injuries and suspensions, were struggling when Rees Simpson was summoned to the fray.

And while it would be unfair on Simpson to say he turned the game single-handed, it is certainly true that Rovers looked a changed side with their mini midfielder on their side.

Simpson’s eager running and classy touches at last gave the crowd something to enthuse about after an hour of dreary drudgery.

But there was the inevitable suspicion that such a lightweight might find the hurly burly of regular Banks’s League football hard going.

Northwood, though, is looking on the bright side for Simpson who cut short a three-year contract at Chesterfield to rejoin his former mentor; Rovers youth coach Brian Bignall, at the Moat.

Said Northwood: “Brian took Rees to Burton Albion as a 15-year-old but they weren’t interested. They might have missed out. The lad looks very sharp and it’s all about opportunities with us at the moment. He got one on Saturday, and he did well. Okay, so he’s a lightweight – but so is Billy Bremner! He looks to have a lot of skill and I’m hoping he’s got a good future with Gresley.”
