This week marked the end of an all-too-brief era at the Moat Ground.

The departure of coach Steve Dolby to join neighbours Burton Albion as assistant manager was heralded by a dignified announcement from manager Frank Northwood, who said: “We wish Steve well.”

Indeed, though, Northwood must have felt gutted at the loss of his genial and knowledgeable right hand man. Rovers, under Dolby’s tutelage, have not only blossomed into an attractive footballing side. They have experienced unprecedented success. During Dolby’s reign they have lost just three games.

It would have been easy for Northwood to react with anger at Dolby’s sudden departure with the season just a few, short weeks old.

Sections of the Gresley following may not be so restrained in their reaction. They may see Dolby as a deserter, leaving the club high and dry on the threshold of a vitally important year.

To do that, however, is to underestimate Dolby’s sense of loyalty to Burton; a club whose fortunes he has always held dear after a distinguished and successful career in the black and amber.

Dolby said this week that there was no other job he would have quit the Moat Ground for. I believe this to be true.

Therefore Northwood’s gentlemanly response to his coach’s resignation, commendable though it was, was the only reaction he could have made.

Northwood also called for full compensation from Burton.

Considering the importance of Dolby to the club, the work put in during the summer and the time of the season, Northwood’s call for cash was fully justified.

Burton Albion cannot replace Steve Dolby, but they can and should do the next best thing and pay Gresley a fee commensurate with Dolby’s value at the club. Northwood’s “£2 – 3,000” was probably on the modest side.

Rovers full back Peter Perry has been hit by a double family tragedy. Perry’s mother-in-law died recently. Shortly afterwards his son was admitted to hospital with suspected meningitis.

Said manager Frank Northwood: “We all feel very sorry for Peter and wish him well.”
