John McGinlay

New Gresley Rovers boss John McGinlay watched his team stride to a 4-1 Cup victory at Sutton Coldfield Town (Tues) then declared: "We've set our standards - now let's stick to them."

The Rovers boss was watching his team in action for the first time since taking over as player-manager two weeks ago but refused to take any of the credit for Rovers' best away win of the season, insisting: "It's too early for me to have had any influence yet. The credit has got to go to Alan (Titterton) and Gary (Norton) - they've kept the players going and had a hell of a lot of input.

"I'm absolutely chuffed to bits with the attitude the boys have shown, not just tonight but in training and on Saturday when we had a practice game. We shut people down, made them make mistakes and capitalised on them. Simon Tucker scored a great hat trick and big Kevin Allsop has worked his socks off. We've set our standards tonight - now we've got to keep to them. If you want to nit-pick, the goal we gave away was sloppy but overall I thought the performance was excellent."

McGinlay's thoughts now turn towards Saturday's FA Umbro Trophy 2nd round tie at Congleton, with both Tucker and Allsop withdrawn before the end of Tues game with the trip to Cheshire in mind.

Said McGinlay: " The boys that have played tonight have done themselves no harm so there might not be too many changes on Saturday, although you never know. One of the good things about tonight was that the lads who didn't play went out and trained before the game and showed great attitude.

"They've got to show a bit of patience but we're training on Thursday and we've got a reserve game on Friday night."

Striker Neil Kitching will begin his comeback from a broken leg against Bilston reserves at the Moat Ground while McGinlay plans to run the rule over Gavin Lewis, a left-sided midfielder who as been recommended by Newport County and comes "highly regarded".
