Weston pre-match news

25th October 2002
Manager Jon Newsome faces a defensive crisis for Saturday’s away trip to the seaside.

Stuart Evans had to leave the field during Tuesday’s 1 – 1 draw with Rugby United at the Moat Ground. He has sustained a recurrence of the calf injury that has kept him out for most of the season.

Newsome said: “Stuart is a lot better than he was on Tuesday but we will have to wait until tomorrow to see if he’s fit to play. He’s been giving us some solidity at the back.

“Stuart needs to decide if he is fit. If not he needs to drop out and get the problem sorted. I can’t keep putting him in the side and then have him to sub him because it disrupts the things.”

Ian Bluck has a sore back but is expected to play while team mate Owen James could be unavailable due to work commitments.

If both Evans and James are missing, Newsome is likely to play a 4-4-2 formation with Bluck and Andy Cheetham in the middle of the back four with Richard Wardle and Gary White on either side of them.

Newsome as said that these problems do not necessarily mean a return to action himself. “I don’t want to play but I know that there will be times when I might have to.”

“The trip to Weston is a long one for us and it will seem an even longer one if we come away with nothing. I’d be happy with a 0-0 and a clean sheet.

“We don’t seem to have done very well against the top sides and been on the end of some severe beatings. It is not a physical thing it’s a mental thing when we come up against these sides so we’ve got to overcome this barrier if we are to get anything from the game.”
