Moore surprises for Frank - Andy Parker – Burton Mail

18th January 1991
Gresley boss Frank Northwood has handed a massive vote of confidence to stand-in keeper Tony Moore on the eve of Rovers’ “biggest game of the season”.

With the countdown underway to Rovers’ FA Vase fourth round clash with Northern Leaguers Billingham Town Northwood revealed that first choice keeper Bob Aston – injured in the last round of the competition on December 15 – had offered to make a dramatic return to action with a pin in his broken thumb.

Northwood said today: “Bob was willing to play but that has to be my decision and I just don’t want to take a chance.

“Tony Moore has come into the side and he’s been superb. I must confess, he’s surprised me – and it’s been a nice surprise.

“I’m sure he’s looking forward to it – and I’m certain he won’t let us down.”

Northwood added Dave Redfern and Steve Adcock to the 13 on duty in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Westfields and said: “We had a dodgy spell last week and I think the lads were guilty of taking it for granted a bit that they would win. But I’m awfully sure they won’t be taking anything for granted tomorrow.”

Former Gresley boss David Nish has helped with Gresley’s pre-match preparation by providing a detailed analysis of the Teeside outfit.

Said Northwood: “We know quite a lot about Billingham. David says he thinks we can beat them and I sure hope he’s right. I’m just wondering if David has judged us by the standards of during his spell here, because I feel it’s a lot better Gresley side that we’ve got now than in his day.

“It’s the big one for us. Everyone at the club is looking forward to it and with Burton Albion away and Derby not having a game I hope we can get a big crowd behind us.”
