Gresley Rovers vs Pegsons

We entertained Coalville works side Pegsons in a Leicestershire Senior League clash on the 4th September 1946.

Rovers: Jack Bradford, George (Roper) Parker, Ted Bowler, Arthur Brown, Eric Rose, Ron Cope, John Staley, Les Marshment, Alf Corner, Mick Harrison, Harry Mitchell.

This Wednesday night victory gave the good size crowd plenty of thrills in spite of the adverse atmospheric conditions.

Pegsons had the advantage of the spin and they chose to defend the Church Street end which gave them the assistance of a rather blustery breeze. The first break came from Rovers and keeper Harper was called upon to save a good shot from Marshment.

Pegsons retaliated and forced a couple of corners without effect but a few minutes later they got the lead through Sammy Richards (who played a few games for Rovers after the war) his shot gave Bradford no chance. Soon after Staley equalised with a fine drive which well beat Harper.

More good work saw Rovers open up a two-goal lead with a brace of goals for Alf Corner. S Richards reduced the deficit before the interval to 3-2.

Further goals gave Rovers an emphatic victory with Corner taking his tally to five. The other strikes came from Brown, Marshment and Mick Harrison. J Richard got Pegsons third goal.

The gate receipts were £20-2s-7d.
