Rovers collect League shield

Gresley Rovers plan a celebration night tonight in their final appearance before Saturday’s Wembley FA Vase final.
Rovers will receive the Banks’s League championship shield and medals after their home league game against Halesowen Harriers at the Moat Ground (7.30).

The game comes hot on the heels of Saturday’s trip to title rivals Ilkeston Town, in which Rovers boss Frank Northwood rested six players who are likely to make the starring line-up at Wembley – yet still won 2-0.

Goals from Brian Beresford and Andy Moore were enough to give Gresley – with skipper Richard Denby, midfielder Neil Lovell and strikers Paul Acklam, Kieron Smith and Carl Rathbone all side-lined and full back John Barry on the substitutes’ bench – a comfortable win.

Northwood, however, is likely to field his ‘Wembley’ line-up tonight in a dress rehearsal for the biggest day in the club’s history.

The veteran boss said: “It’s my view that we should stick to the 13 who did the business for us in the last three rounds of the Vase. They are the boys who got us to Wembley and all being well they will be the ones on duty on Saturday.

“It means that people like Martin Dick and Brian Beresford will have to sit it out, but they know the score and they are just happy to be part of the squad.”

Rovers’ only injury doubt hangs over utility man Steve Adcock who is still troubled by a calf muscle strain.

Northwood is anxious that Rovers should “turn on the style” tonight after recent criticism directed at them by Harriers boss Brian Beasley.
