Red-hot Rovers

Gresley Rovers meet Borrowash Victoria in the first leg of the Derbyshire Senior Cup final tonight (7.30) in an unusual role of red-hot favourites.
FA Vase finalists Gresley go into the game having won the Banks’s League at a canter while Vics have struggled in the lower reaches of the Central Midlands Supreme Division.

But Rovers boss Frank Northwood was today playing down the odds, insisting: “Being favourites doesn’t mean anything in cup football. Borrowash haven’t won anything this season so they’ll obviously be looking at this game as their chance to salvage something.

“But I’m sure we’ll go there and score goals. What I’ll be looking for is a clean sheet at the other end. I hope our fans will be patient, like they have been all season. We’ll be looking to bring them back to our place next week.

“We played them in the FA Cup earlier in the season and won 2-1 – but it was very close. We could have won handsomely but we found ourselves having to defend desperately and that goes to show there’s no easy game in the cup.”

Defender Scott Elliott, who is suffering from a recurrence of a kidney ailment, is Rovers’ only doubt. Brian Beresford is ineligible, having played in an earlier round for Stapenhill.
